I've been playing for 6+ years now and I share many emotions of yours. I'm part of those who still play but don't really know why.
Well, if I have to say the truth, I haven't really "played" for a long time, but that's because my main character (the main one I'm willing to play right now and which has the meso to fund other characters) has been having log-in issues, first with a strange issue which got me stuck at character selection screen, now with a weird error 38 crash every time I try to log into it.
This has been going on since mid-October. I've only been able to play a few days since then. Sure, I could've played with other characters, but I really didn't feel like doing so, seeing how the company I've supported (even financially, by buying good quantities of NX in the past) has been completely ignoring me. I guess it's a sign that I shouldn't play?
In any case, the game has been linked to several positive memories, to me. I've had so much fun with my friends on this game.. I still remember when several other italian people played it. We formed guilds, had fun with people from other countries, and - I'm really glad to say that - enjoyed the best years of this game. Yeah, because playing it before had a feeling which can't just be compared to now. You could say it changed because of getting used and bored of it, after so many years. Well, I'm pretty sure there are other factors which helped with that.
MapleStory was so different many years ago.. it had an unique feeling attached to it that seems to be gone after so long. Maybe it's how they managed the game and its updates or maybe something else. I sometimes think that the original makers of the game weren't really expecting such an incredible economical success, so.. they just made it simply because they liked doing it, with no huge financial expectations and whatnot. They made the game with a pure heart. And many people felt that.
Then, after the staff slowly changed with years.. the owners started becoming greedier and making content purely targeted to money-making. And that's when the game started getting worse. Bosses requiring great potential'd equips (NX) to be defeated, etc.. some time before Big Bang, Maple had stopped giving that feeling I was talking about. That's probably because the owners started focusing more on money than anything else. Just look at how they keep releasing all those classes. There are seriously too many, but.. they keep doing that, just because it earns them lots of money. THAT is, in my opinion, how the game was truly ruined.
That's it. There's no way back. They took a road with no exit. All that's left to do now, is wait for the game's final fall. And I'm feeling that, if they'll choose to release the Unlimited patch as it is in KMS, they'll only make GMS' death even faster. It's a matter of years now. Maybe even less.
They DO realise that by doing this they're losing players, but they - as several others have already said before me - really seem to want to milk the players the most money they can before the game's decline, and the move they've made with the Unlimited patch just makes me think that's what they're trying to do. Right now they can't even care less if many players quit, as long as they know that a good part of them will spend money on trying to make themselves as powerful as possible.
So yeah. I'm hoping my character gets unstuck, but only because I want to spend some free time playing the game every now and then. I doubt that it'll ever go back to what it was before. The feelings the game gives me have permanently changed.. for the worse, obviously. Now that I think about it, the only things left about this game which might give me some feelings are some characters' storylines (Kaiser's was definitely a masterpiece), the graphics and the amazing background music. THAT, I will never stop being a great fan of.
