Y'know, since it was the Heroes who initiated the attack on the Black Mage (by storming his house), you'd think that being punctual would be a possibility. Or they could have at least waited for a full complement of attackers before diving in. Unless I missed some extremely impending Black Mage action in the lore, it just seems the Cloaked One was just sitting on his throne when Mercedes and the Dragonic Duo burst in. Would waiting or assembling have changed the outcome? I don't know. Is this the wrong thread? Yes.
