I wouldn't mind but how strict is the "writing once a week" rule?

It's not extremely strict. The golden rule is quality > quantity. I just have to have some type of ballpark posting guideline so people don't think they can make a post once and then not write again for months (if you intend to do that, becoming a contributor might be a better idea). A few posts a month is generally average for our writers.
