Introduction [#INTRO]

I'm
sure many of us have been through puberty, some are still going through
it (like me), and some haven't hit it yet, so I've set up this guide to
clear up any questions boys' may have on puberty.

Note: I am still going through puberty myself, anything written here is what

I've gone through, or my friends have. Everyone is different, people
change into an adult differently to others, but it's still the same
basic process. Also, I will need as many boys/men to help with their
experiences/tips on the subjects in here, to get as wide of a picture
as possible.

Voice
[#VOICE]

One of the first signs that you are going through puberty is you voice will start to break, which means when you speak, your voice may hit really high notes, then drop down low. It may be embarressing at first, but once the 'breaking' stops, you will lose your ugly, pre-teen squeaky girl-like voice, and gain a more adult one. I started this at about 11, and really don't remember how long it lasted, it wasn't that long.

ndynslvr Wrote:I also must say that just because your normal voice gets deeper, it does not mean that you lose your high pitch voice, although some do lose parts of it. I believe that high voice is called falsetto.

Hair [#HAIR]

Another sign is hair. Body, pubic and facial. You will start to grow a moustache, and to be honest, it looks stupid. When you start to grow one, it should be a sign for your parents to buy you your first razor, some shops wont sell you a razor because you're young, so either go to another one or get someone to buy you one. A guide on how to shave is in a subsection later.

Also, you may get hair under your armpits which isn't too bad to get. Also some boys will get loads of armpit hair, some wont get any until they're later into puberty.

You will also get pubic hair. Most people just call it pubes for short, but they're nothing to be ashamed of. They are just hairs that grow in the pubic region, hence the name. The pubic region is the area in the frontal genital area, the crotch and sometimes the top of the inside legs. It darker than the hair already growing there, and is usually the natural colour of your eyebrows. Many people trim/shave/wax their pubic hair, which you can do too, but it is not needed.

Finally, some boys will get hair which grows up from the pubic area, towards their bellybutton, which is normal. Some boys will also get dark hair on their legs/arms/chest, all this is completely normal, and it is normal not to get a lot of hair too.

Shaving [#SHAVE]

You will need:
Razor - Not too cheap, not too expensive. The guide below is using a hand one (not those electric ones)
Shaving Foam/Gel - Either will do
Aftershave balm - Get a good one, otherwise where you shave will become all irritated

First of all, place a small amount of gel or foam into your hands and apply to your face, don't use too much or you'll waste it.

When you've done that, grab your razor, and with the side with the blade(s) on, slide it across your face. Be careful here. Don't press too hard or you'll cut yourself a lot. Don't go too lightly otherwise you will just pull the hairs out and that'll hurt. It may take some time to find the right pressure, although once you found it it's easy to mantain.

Do this across your whole cheeks, chin, upper lip, neck, etc, until you feel happy with it. Wash off any excess foam/gel, and check again to make sure you got anything too noiceable, you may need to go back again if you're new to it and get any un-noitced patches.

Now, some people don't use aftershave balm, but I highly reccommend it. It usually has a nice smell, and it's easy to put on. Just put a bit on your hand and rub into where you just shaved. It makes it feel less irritated.

Spots [#SPOTS]

Ugh, everyone hates these. They look ugly, they feel ugly, and they make you feel uncomfortable when you have one. Caused by puberty, stress, and to be honest, dirtiness.

First of all, we will probably need to differentiate between acne and a common spot.

Acne is a medical problem, the area will usually be red and sore, with loads of spots over it (not usually yellow-heads). You should go and see your doctor about acne, he will prescribe you different things on different levels of it.

A common spot is one which will pop up now and then, often before a date, or school photo. There are different types, but the most common one is a yellowhead. Stupidly ugly and annoying. I would advise not to pop or scratch at them, since it may cause scarring. Instead, wash the area as your normally would, sometimes with special cleaners. My mum bought me this expensive as hell kit for when I got spots, it didn't work very well, so be careful with what you can buy.

To stop spots from appearing, I use Clearsil, which is just a facial cleanser and it keeps most spots at bay.

ndynslvr Wrote:Also, you might wanna mention that spots or acne are not entirely limited to the facial region, I have some acne in the back. You also might want to mention that the best remedy for that if you have mild spots is just simply washing yourself more and washing your bed sheets often, like every two weeks.

Odor [#ODOR]

When you've been doing P.E. at school, have you noticed that you've started to smell when you sweat? Welcome to Body Odor (B.O.)

Before, when you were young, when you got all sweaty, you didn't smell that bad. Now, sweat starts to smell, and it's not your fault.

Use a good antiperspirants (NOT DEODORANT) to stop you from sweating. Deodorant only masks the smell, whereas antiperspirants stop you from sweating. Now, most deodorants include an antiperspirant, so don't worry too much, because I guess you want to smell nice and stop sweating, right?

Your Penis [#PENIS]

All boys have one. Don't be ashamed of it. Be it big, small, fat, skinny, it doesn't really matter, girls don't care about the size of as much as they make out.

When you go through puberty, your penis will grow in size, in both length and width. You may even have 'growth spurts' of the penis, where over the course of a week, your penis will grow a lot.

One of the most common fears among boys (and men) is that they're penis is too small. The average size is around 5.5inches erect, which isn't that big.

If you find that you have a white, gloopy mixture under your foreskin (if you're uncircumsized), it's called smegma. It's caused due to not being cleaned enough, so make sure you clean your penis at least daily.

I've heard that some boys can git little yellow spots (I never have) on their penis, which is due to a lack of cleaning. Just make sure you clean your penis regurarly (daily) and you'll be fine.

Questions [#QUEST]

NoJobNoRules Wrote:Myles, do you have anything against electric razors? I have yet to see a downside to them. :o

They don't give a close enough shave for most men, hence why most people prefer a hand-razor.

To ask me a question, e-mail me at pubertyproblems@hotmail.co.uk . If you want to ask anonymously, use http://www.sendanonymousemail.net/ to send an email without me knowing your address. I will always keep secruity in mind, and I wouldn't spread anything about anyone who asks a question. Or, you could just post in this thread.

Nice guide except there is a typo on the third to last paragraph. I also must say that just because your normal voice gets deeper, it does not mean that you lose your high pitch voice, although some do lose parts of it. I believe that high voice is called falsetto.

He said everyone goes through puberty differently. We need experience of more than one boy.

I would definitely not choose antiperspirants over deodorants. Antiperspirants mess up your body's natural cooling system because your sweat is blocked in the armpits and it has to find another sweat gland to exit. Over time this cause serious problems to your body. Recent studies have also shown that antiperspirants contribute to more serious health effects such as breast cancer.

This is not saying that deodorants have no health effects either, just less.

I thought the average would be around 6, but considering boys who have just entered puberty it lowers it down to about 5.5

It's apparently 6inch (15cm) for North America and Europe. Won't pretend to know other places, but we all know the stereotypes...

Now everybody can just pull out their penis, make it erect, and put it against their computer monitor to see if they have an average penis! How convenient!

I'm just too nice...[/sarcasm]

can i use other types of cream to substitute shaving foam/gel (do you mean hair gel or something else? :f6: )? like after shaving cream, toothpaste etc. maybe that sounded stupid to you but i've read somewhere that any kind of cream will work when one shaves.

hope to hear a reply from you soon

Myles, do you have anything against electric razors? I have yet to see a downside to them. :o

They suck. Electric razors cannot even being to compare the close shave you'd get if you just used a regular razor. No argument here.
