@Worthyness: The types of jobs that are available and the types of jobs 17 year olds can get don't require a great deal of skill or efficiency. The employers aren't looking for people who will be around forever, just looking for someone they can squeeze as long as possible before tossing out. That's not the kind of job anyone should be looking for, but it's the type of job a 17 year old will take because they don't know any better and don't have many other options. Employers also have a great deal of leverage on adults without careers right now because the market is so tough, people have to settle for much, much less than they're worth. If you didn't have great skills prior to a job loss and were just squeezing by, what chance do you have now? And it's not like it's possible for adults to go back to school because they have tons of real responsibilities and not a lot of help available to them.
