Part A:

Directions: The following question requires you to construct a coherent essay that integrates your interpretation of Documents A-J and your knowledge of the period referred to in the question. High cores will be earned onlyby essays that both cite key pieces of evidence from the documents and draw on outside knowledge of the period.

1. In what ways did ideas and values held by Puritans influence the political, economic, and social development of the New England colonies from 1630 through the 1660s?

2. Analyze the political, diplomatic, and military reasons for the United States victory in the Revolutionary War. Confine your answer to the period 1775–1783.

3. Analyze the ways in which controversy over the extension of slavery into western territories contributed to the coming of the Civil War. Confine your answer to the period 1845–1861.

This thread is meant to share information and whatnot with others regarding the DBQ/FRQs that appeared on this year's exam (2010). Feel free to throw out everything you wrote. This is a place where you can share what you wrote, get input/feedback, and anticipate the score(s) you may get on your essays.

Remember: No one is perfect here. Don't be afraid to share what you wrote. Even though its over, at least alleviate a bit of your suffering here by finding out the possible things you could have thrown in and have an active discussion with other fellow APUSHers. You may realize that you may not have epic phailled at all.

I'll post my analysis of the possible stuff that could be thrown onto the essay responses once I have some free time.

Well, I don't think my DBQ was THAT bad...but I severely lacked in outside evidence. All I remember putting down is some stuff about Anne Hutchinson and the Halfway Covenant, which thankfully is just barely in the 1660s. I "forgot" about the Salem Witch trials. Should've put that in.

I think I did a decent job in the FREs. I didn't do incredibly well, but I think I did from a 5-7.

WOW. You guys had the absolute EASIEST questions this year, with the DBQ perhaps the toughest. My GOD those are simple.

Yeah our whole room gave a collective groan when we opened it up and saw the DBQ. It wasn't bad; just kind of, "really?" type of thing.

Better than me on the outside evidence. What's a Halfway Covenant? (Well, I know now... >_>)

I also wasn't really thinking straight on 3, over-thought it and wrote a lot of irrelevant crap, and I completely BSed my response to 5. "An increase in immigration was caused by the US's global preeminence and prosperity after World War II as well as loosened restrictions [I had no idea if this was true]. As a result, the nation experienced an increase in diversity." <-- sums it up.

I tried to flow in my outside information, such as Roger Williams leaving Massachusetts to form Rhode Island due to social restrictions in massachusetts.

For question 5, I attributed increased immigration to the rise of communist regimes (Cuba) and continued poverty in central and south america.

I also wasn't really thinking straight on 3, over-thought it and wrote a lot of irrelevant crap, and I completely BSed my response to 5. That kinda works. However though, this law, the Immigration Act of 1965 (formally known as the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965) was a hallmark legislation (in terms of immigration) where immigration restrictions were loosened (and shifted the bulk of the immigration to Latin America and Asia). And that was passed during the Vietnam War.

If you dropped that in (alluding to it), that was the key thing the AP readers may be looking for in the "New Immigration" portion of #5.

Overall though, what you said may get you some points, despite the fact you forgot to drop in the 1965 law. You did mention "diversity" and "prosperity", the "cause and effect" for the "New Immigration" (aka you did answer the prompt in some way or form)
