I'll consider using this if it's open-source.

As obnoxious as he is, I still don't see why not, myself. It's not like your code in this instance is any great secret. You could get some experience using one of the open SVN repositories like SourceForge, publish it where everyone can see you're the original author/owner, and even get additional community input on how it can be improved and potentially learn new techniques like using XML or embedded databases as we discussed. Collaboration with others is good experience and since you own the project in whatever you shove it in you'd have final say over what gets incorporated and anyone stealing your work and trying to claim it as their own has an easily pinpointed online proof of who the original author was and when.
Making it open source also increases the number of people willing to vouch for the safety of the code and endorse it.
For the little effort it's a good pay back, so please don't summarily dismiss the idea just because it was suggested by an ass.
(I still think these sorts of things are better as webapps in most cases myself, then there's no security concerns and you can cram ad on the page and get a bit of revenue from usage to encourage you to keep updating it and making it better)

Well, as you already know, this one was one of my first applications, and the coding is just an absolute mess.
Nevertheless, I will definitely think about it. Maybe sometime in the future, when my coding has improved enough to use an embedded database?

You shouldn't withhold because you're afraid of looking stupid or having done it poorly.
If anything, getting the input and advice from others via open sourcing is the best way to learn because you can apply directly to something you actually are passionate about (or at least interested in).

Congratulations, hopefully your courage will be rewarded by learning something new or improving what you already know.
