New Super Mario Bros. Wii & Nintendo's problem
#1
There hasn't been a single thread about this. Why is that? Mario has been a household name for years. You'd think the newest game in the series would garner at least some attention. I admit I don't play many console games as I used to. I feel like console gaming as a whole is in a steep decline, but what Nintendo did (or didn't do) with this game is pretty inexcusable.

An editor at IGN had this to say about it:

"This is aimed squarely at Nintendo and all the fanboys defending its decision: make any excuse you want, but any other first party publisher on any other current generation system would have ensured that a game as high a caliber as New Super Mario Bros Wii would have put focus on getting the game online. The fact that this game totally shuns online completely shows Wii owners just how unimportant internet play is to the company. Or rather, it continues to show how ignorant Nintendo is to the online demand."

He's right too. There is no excuse for this game not being online. Mario Kart Wii has shown that Nintendo knows how to do online correctly. There is virtually ZERO lag while racing. So why can't we play co-op online? Why is Nintendo neglecting an important aspect of games nowadays? Needless to say I'm pretty disappointed in the direction Nintendo is going. All I wanted to do was stomp on stranger's heads, or throw them into pits. Super Mario Bros online co-op could've been amazing. I'm not even going to get into the general laziness of having two Toads as the 3rd and 4th player. So much potential was wasted.

Discuss.

There's a reason i haven't touched my wii after i had it for 6 months.

This is one of many reasons why that is.

No online really did piss me off. I'll get it eventually, but not for a while after it's released.

Nintendo is still printing money with their two boxes. I think they still feel like they can't do anything wrong. Hopefully the now declining sales with make them think about trying to get their hardcore audience back a little <_<

I would get NSMBW, but to be honest, I don't have 3 other people to play it with. I'm looking at getting a PS3 now anyway..

Then they'll just crank out more casual games.

Because obviously casual gamers make nintendo rake in way more money than the hardcores.

I love when people throw the word hardcore into everything.

Well, that's what Nintendo's calling the audience that they are in fact ignoring and driving away, no matter how much they claim to be supporting them still.

(I personally hate the term and think it's used very incorrectly myself. Hardcore should refer more to games like Ninja Gaiden, Contra, and R-type where they're just bloody hard, rather than just mainstream stuff and popular competitive games).

I'm a big mario fan, have been all my life, however I can say this game does look disappointing. I'll wait for one of my friends to buy it to actually try it.

The game is meant to be played multiplayer. That's not going to happen for me so I don't have much interest in it.

You can't judge a game if you haven't played it. As a stand alone Mario game it'll probably be good. However will it have tons upon tons of replay value? No. That is where Nintendo screwed up.

Eh, depends on how you play it. I replayed the original NSMB and got all of the (big/star/whatever) coins from each level. Biggrin

Then again... I lost my NSMB cartridge. Rolleyes

I have a brother and sister, and they both loved NSMB, so I'm good.

Except my brother is being a plantain, and being like "I DON'T WANT TO BUY IT, BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE IT, AND EVEN THOUGH I AM GOING TO WANT TO PLAY IT, I'M GONNA SAY THAT I DON'T WANT TO PLAY IT."

We played the Mario vs. Luigi thing for months after release.
