How do these work? Like if I fail one, will I lose a slot or can I just keep using hammers until two pass?

If it works it works.
If it fails count hammer count goes up, slots don't change. You have to either inno (and pass 2 hammers) or pass a clean slate to get the slot back.

They are not scrolls so nope.
