Hello Southperry,
I am currently doing research for a term paper on how the acceptance of piracy relating to music files has changed the music culture and the music industry. This is for an IT class of mine called Social Informatics, which is largely just a discussion based class, where we read articles and discuss how technology is affecting society, and vice versa. As part of the project we are required to survey people from an online source, whether it is Facebook, emails, or a forum. I have chosen to first use forums for this project, because I believe the members of the forums I participate in are very savvy to technology, and the issues surrounding many things in the online world, such as illegal downloads.
NOTE: In this survey I will take down no personal information from you other than your age which is necessary to the study. I will not even take down your username, and will probably not even mention these results as having come from this forum.

Because a lot of music is freely available for listening (e.g. YouTube) and it's far too easy to get away with

It does increase visibility and such, but if everyone does it, that's silly. I think it's not so much that piracy has changed the music industry for the better, but that the system sucked in the first place, if people have such an incentive to cheat it all the time.

How acceptable is piracy to you?
Kind of acceptable; I'm farily certain many up-and-coming bands/arists out there are unable to make as much money as they could before piracy.
Why do you believe piracy is not seen as stealing by many people?
I think it's because to them, it's no different than borrowing someone's disc and then getting the songs off the disc

Yes and no. As stated before, while many up-and-coming artists may suffer a blow to their profits because of piracy, it also helps spread attention to those artists around faster.

Well, I'm more of a radio person, and I can usually listen to all the songs I like in online radio, so there is no need for me to do such a thing.

Yeah, but back then I never had a portable way to listen to digital music files (MP3 player).

It's a generally accepted action, although I'm positive most people acknowledge that pirating music is wrong since we are still stealing property.

I believe people recognize that this is stealing. Downloading music has become such a social norm that the action seems all right because everybody else does it. The additional fact that the chances of any repercussions are so slight that downloading music has likely become the fastest and cheapest way to obtain desirable music.

The internet's capacity to spread almost anything is amazing. Artists' music is more accessible than it has ever been so in a way, piracy has expanded the target market but whether this increases the amount of sales remains to be seen.

Because if they're downloading it due to being unable to purchase it, then it's a sale they wouldn't have anyway. Also, a lot of people feel that, since many people do it, it "doesn't matter."

Piracy has really helped spread out music to people who would normally not be able listen.

Definitely. Not just because of piracy, though.

I feel bad doing it, but I only did it because I was ridiculously broke at the time I got an iPod. I buy music on iTunes quite often.

Because it's not a lost sale, like Jon said. Also the legality of the situation, especially with torrents (where you technically aren't contributing to the problem if you don't seed).

Like Jon said, piracy helps with outreach. Newer audiences will definitely want to hear a song many times over before they decide that they like it, and these days you can't judge music by its cover. Or title.

If something is on the internet, nobody is going to be able to stop someone from copying it. It's like posting an image and asking people not to copy it and use it even though it's as simple as right clicking it, copying, and pasting into paint. I think it's seen more as sharing, than stealing.

How acceptable is piracy to you? - I feel that if you were to download an album after a certain period of time after its release, it would be fine. Even if its right after or before it is released, I am accepting of it.
Why do you believe piracy is not seen as stealing by many people? - The music can be heard in so many places that it is almost a bit outlandish to call it stealing when you can hear music from so many different sources. Bands will even have fan pages where they have full songs available to listen to.
Do you think piracy has, in anyway, changed the music industry for the better? - I feel the availability of music will lead to more people being willing to attend concerts and by merchandise there or from other sources. It would also force bands to think more openly about the songs they make and allow them to be more varied with their music, since real lose taken from producing the songs.

It's getting more and more accepted in the society, but I believe that if everyone downloaded all the media from internet, there soon wouldn't be hardly any new (good) movies, games, music etc.

I honestly cannot answer that one as I don't know what the income of an artist consists of. Better for the consumers, sure. Even for the people who don't download music illegally, there's now services that are legally run with advertisement funds and/or small monthly fee's (such as Spotify).

Just to clarify because It may have been confusing, the section "Questions pertaining to if you answered yes to downloading music illegally", may have identical questions but they are questions pertaining to AFTER you started pirating music, so don't think I just asked the same question twice and not answer the questions in that section (unless of course you haven't pirated music). Yes, but it also has to do with the fact that I've grown up a lot. I listen to a broader list of genres and bands just because I've had more time to like them. I feel it's kind of obvious for most of the people that they start broadening their musical tastes when they get older, and they get to know more bands. Time makes us wiser I think.

I can only talk for my country here, but when most of the albums aren't available on physical copies and they're quite pricey, downloading is quite easy, affordable, and you can get everything that isn't published here.

Actually, yes. Before the pirating era, most of the music industry had started halting and rotting in a corner. They would release squat, and most labels and artists were in standby. They had to get their asses moving to keep the audiences happy.
Another thing that is quite real and makes me feel good, is that MOST artists don't live by records sales anymore, they live by money from shows and presentations, which are in a great state of health lately.
