I just got sworn in yesterday as a Machinist's Mate in the Nuclear Field
Just wondering if anyone has any family members or friends who are in the Navy (preferably those who are in the NF as well) who can give me a heads up on what to look forward to

My brother is in the Navy on the USS Curts (diesel powered frigate) and as such isn't in the Nuclear Field. But he is a technician... not sure which field.
Last I checked the only US vessels with nuclear missiles are submarines (boomers)... which is a pretty sneaky way to nuke some nation.

But he is a technician... not sure which field.This is true, but there is the NF (Nuclear Field) and the GM (Gunner's Mate) Gunner's mates are responsible for the guided missles, nuclear warheads and the like.

The Nuke program gives you three different MOS' (Military Occupational Specialties), Machinist's Mate (MM), Electronics Technician (ET) and Electrician's Mate (EM). The latter two being very similar...
The Nuke program itself has to do with duties in nuclear propulsion plants operating reactor control, propulsion and power generation systems. You need to learn how nuclear power works, how we convert it into electricity, how we keep it safe and contained, etc. Afterwards, you are assigned to a ship (usually a nuclear powered aircraft carrier), or a sub (I took sub because its less sought after, and Id get Sub pay, Sea pay, AND Haz Pay)
I'll probably be a MM, which deals more with making sure the mechanical aspects of the ship and its power source are operational. In a nut shell, I dont want to sit in front of a computer all the time.
Basically for me, itll go Boot Camp ~> 1 year of A School ~> 6 months of C School ~> another 6 months of C School ~> 2 years of active duty ~> 2 years of mandatory re-enlistment. At this point, I can either decline reenlistment, meaning I would have 2 years of Reservist duty to do, or reenlist and make this a career.
