I'm surprised I couldn't find a thread on this issue: this is by far the most disturbing news I heard from the US this year. Japan has a serious issue of underage girls posting nude pictures of themselves on the web (seriously) but this is like one-uping that with a man. Seriously, I thought gay guys jumping off bridges was a running joke or something. Here's to hoping the guy goes to heaven.

God, what the hell is up with people? Do people have no concept of respecting another's privacy anymore? Even if that guy didn't commit suicide the people who put that webcam there deserve a bat to the face for doing that.

I have mixed feelings about this.

I'm ambivalent, but then I don't have any illusions of privacy or capacity for shame.

What does Japanese females posting their own nudes have anything to do with an American male having his privacy violated?

Ugh. Forget what I said in this thread. Anything I say will just point daggers at my throat.

Stop expecting them to be something they're not and that goes away.

No, Barbarism is when you rape pillage and murder.
This is just kids being stupid and a drama queen over reacting because society has convinced him that it was the end of the world for people to know he does something everyone else does with someone he believes will bring him shame.

Don't try to equate either side with levels of atrocity you have no frame of reference for. This was absolutely nothing.

Sweeping generalization.

I'm going to have to disagree with you, Eos, because you're basing your ambivalent treatment of this recent string of suicides off what I like to call the "logic of global awareness," the idea that we may all have our "issues" or "problems" here or there, but they're nothing compared to those faced by other people around the world, and thus shouldn't be given as much credit/thought due to the global frame of reference.

It's a conversation I had with one of my best friends, the daughter of a psychologist, who argued her side (which I completely agree with) very well: just because we (ex. anyone who can post on an internet forum) have the opportunities of a great lifestyle doesn't mean problems, stresses, or instigators of depression are "overrated," "overly dramatic" cries of selfish egotism. Just as easily as you made the assumption that Tyler Clementi jumped off the George Washington bridge because he was a "drama queen who was being stupid and overreacting" (which, by the way, you have no frame of reference to make in that you didn't know him personally and thus cannot judge his personality as the leading motive) can I make the assumption that he lived the short 18 years of his life constantly barraged by messages from his faith, friends, teachers, peers, even family that "homosexuality is a complete abomination and he would be worth more dead than alive," etcetera etcetera. From a psychological standpoint, the very realization that a video of you committing the most heinous degree of this sin was viraled around the internet for the world to see would be enough to tip you over the edge.

Now of course that's an assumption like yours, in that it assumes what kind of life he lived with regards to his relationships in society. But the bottom line is that because it is unknown whether he was a selfish drama queen or an individual who felt truly trapped, the only conclusion that can be made is that he needed help, and none was given. Instead of berating people for seemingly insignificant or overhyped psychological issues, we should be out helping them, listening to them and being there when they need us the most. After all, there's less of a suicide history in helping others than in criticizing them.

The dude MIGHT've overreacted, but then again, we don't know the whole situation.

Those two retards are....douchebags. I can't believe they only got off with invasion of privacy.

Rutgers University suicide - Eos - 2010-10-05

Then we'll have to remain in disagreement.
Most problems are universally irrelevant. Most issues are minor transient things that fade. Some people recognize this and persevere, others are crushed by the minutia and the universe marches on regardless.

Everyone's problems are relevant to them. That's the whole point of perspective. Being incapable of putting the rest of the world in perspective results in things like this.

I find it interesting that you instantly correlate drama queen to being selfish when the two are not mutually exclusive. Oprah's a drama queen who loves to give after all.
As for helping them, irrelevant. You can't help them when they're already gone, you can't help them when they're hiding from you, you can't help them when they don't know enough to want help. Everyone comes into themselves in their own time and some people just don't make it. We learn from the failures and avoid repeating their mistakes. Being critical of them is part of life.

I think he did over react to some degree, but we dont know how accepting his family was to his being gay, or how open he was in revealing the fact that he was gay.

The guys who taped him and released said tape should get way more than invasion of privacy charges.

Overall, I dont think suicide was anything near what he should have done, but it was probably easier for him to end it than to face up what happened and went through it to get through it. Still doesnt mean he should have done it.

Why people need to humiliate other people is beyond me. They should be kicked out of that college and be tried as a felon.

On the other side of the table, I feel for the guy, but he made a cowardly decision in killing himself. Dying is easy. Living is hard. But, there's no ordeal that one can't overcome. Of course, he's still the victim. But he drastically overreacted.

Ok I misspoke; these girls sell nude pictures of themselves to pedophiles who immediately repost them on internet forums. Some are posted by (underage) boyfriends and partners from casual encounters they have (like in the states). Unlike the states, there is no partyvan (the legal age of consent if 13).

What I have a problem with is not that this guy had gay sex secretly filmed but the fact that he was secretly filmed having sex. If a gilr committed suicide under the same condition it would still be national news. He was being a drama queen for going all the way to New York to commit suicide but if he shot himself, again national news.

That's my school and my campus. I was tempted to post this article, but I felt that discussing such a topic would be inconsiderate to the aggrieved party at hand. What is there to possible consider that hasn't already been reported? Are we going to discuss the general issue of suicide or perhaps the invasion of privacy? Regardless, is it fair to discuss such matters in such an abstract and objective fashion when this ultimately ends up being an extremely personal issue? Perhaps it is my proximity to this instance that I am reluctant to advertise this piece of unsavory news any further. When Dharun Ravi becomes someone who I can easily find in five minutes and reach in twenty (email, living quarters, and so forth are accessible to the public) to what extent does the news seem objective, rather than being particularly invasive? It is emotionally boggling to be in proximity of a news piece.
