[COLOR="Red"]So, I actually took the time to go back and look at the prompt for the project my friend and I collaborated on, and there was no mention of not working in a team. Knowing this, we went to our professor after our final and talked to him about it. He was all like, "I'm only going to take the points off and not make you guys get talked to by the dean about plagiarism and cheating and etc." I was pretty mad at him for even considering to refer us. We told him our story, along with not working together clause in the prompt. He said that just because it isn't, we can't assume. He mentioned that just because it doesn't say don't kill people, you can't assume you can. I was thinking in my head, "Yeah, there ARE rules like that." He continued that professors would explicitly state you can work with friends on anything, if you could. So, we got nothing in return except a haughty professor that blamed it on our lack of understanding.
Go figure. Oh, I just checked my final exam grade, perfect 100% which saves my grade average[/COLOR]

Yeah, at least it got me the B in the class. Without those 7 points for the project, I would have needed to get 20/23 points on the final. I've been averaging around 17.5 points on these, so I'm really happy that it was making programs on which I understood well the code and material.

I don't understand the impetus that lead you to believe that your project was going to be a "group project." Especially when it comes to programming, most of it is graded by machines that will raise a red flag when similar codes come up. A lot of college students lie and make up excuses when they get caught for cheating. Most of them feign ignorance. It sucks that you got shafted but professors feel that it is their mission to show that college and the "outside world" is a harsh place. Lesson learned?

Regardless of the outcome, I am glad to know that you got credit for the class? Personally, I'd be satisfied because some universities can be more strict than your's. I know for a fact one of my Programming professors is extremely ANAL about coding. If it's even off by a bit, he'll deduct points. Plagiarism is huge in my university, they don't tolerate it at all. I'm really careful these days when I turn in papers because I don't want it to sound like something I would copy-pasta'd. Even if I did, I would properly quote and cite it, etc.

This is a college, right? Get some law students on his ass. What you have there is called a "loophole". The prompt says what you can and cannot do. If its not on there, it defaults to higher rules: In this case the school. School have any ban on group projects? Nope? City? County? Et cetera.
That Bull about killing people isn't even close to an analogy because there are laws against that.
I hate teachers that over-indulge on their authoritarian powers.

We had a group project last semester with this same prof. In the prompt of that one, there wasn't any mention of group, as with this one, so it was like, "oh, just like last semester"[/COLOR]

Alright thank you for clarifying. It is the professor's fault for not addressing the issue in the syllabus .
