Went to an Apple Store to buy an iPod for Mother's Day. See a bunch of iPads. "these'll be fun to play with" my Dad and I thought. and we did. I go on a mini rant about lack of USB, and my Dad asked a store lady about it. "The iPad doesn't have USB because it uses applications, not software".
From my limited computer education, I've been taught two things make a computer work: The physical hardware, and the programmable software.
So what is this lady trying to say?

Retail people aren't very smart. Though not always the case. Mostly applies to older people that works in retail, not youngins like us. There isn't a difference, last I checked.

In gibberish-applese that means "We don't let you load your own arbitrary software, everything you put in it comes through our app store"
Although historically the difference between software and applications is that an application is a subtype of software - One that actually has an interface and you interact with, as opposed to things like drivers and services that run independently.
