Microsoft Security Essentials.

According to Dennis, it was rated #1 most secured free antivirus of all antiviruses out there.

No love for AVG Anti-virus free?

For spyware I use Malwarebyte's Search and Destroy, although not a lot of people use it.

Windows Defender. It works fine. And it's free.

Any basic free pomegranate works if you're not a dumbass about opening links/downloading things on the Internet.

Microsoft Security Essentials is your thing, then. It uses minimal CPU while running/scanning.

If you go to university/college most likely your school will provide some sort of enterprise edition of some of the commercial anti-virus software available free(you paid for in your tuition) of charge.

Not a problem if you set it to scan daily rather than keeping it running in the background 24/7. You don't need it to do both, and you shouldn't really need it running 24/7 in the background anyway. Don't be dumb with your downloads, and if needed run a quick scan on a file before opening it.

Not really.

Considering that some attacks happen within minutes then disappear without a trace, real time protection is better.

Of course, this is dependent entirely on what you do and what you expect.

It's something like if you want to stop the theif at your door by locking it versus leave the door open, have him steal some crap, then call the cops later and have a chance of getting your stuff back.

Avira i use never gotten one virus. The only time it slows down is when its scanning your computer but you can change that if you want. Its always active in the background.

I got MS Security Essentials.

http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

that is the right one, right?

Also, I have a thing against AVG. It caused constant lock-ups and, on more than one occasion, deleted important files because it thought it was a virus.
