Unspecified Error - KajitiSouls - 2009-06-30
Just this afternoon while I was studying for summer classes, I decided I would install windows updates and java updates I've been putting off for a week or two. Then after that, my laptop started acting a bit strangely.
Whenever my laptop is on and not sleeping/hibernating or w/e, it would seem like it's busy doing something. I'm not sure what. But occasionally I would hear a specific sequence of static noise that I recognize as a CRC error (I had to deal with a corrupt character.wz before, very annoying). Every time the CRC noise comes up, some process or application I'm using would freeze for a second or two ... or four or eight. The freezes would occur regularly but randomly, and it's beginning to drive me insane.
That said, I suspect it's another fking CRC error, but it could be a malware or virus or w/e doing its thing. But if it's the former, why the fk would Microsoft phail so much in dealing with bad HD sector CRC errors -_-;;
So here's what I tried so far:
Rebooting - did nothing to fix the problem.
Windows disk cleaner - set to automatically fix errors if it can. It did report a few bad sectors in the HD, but whether it did anything to fix those, I have no idea. It wasn't very specific. Rebooted.
Spybot scan - nothing strange.
System Restore - failed, unspecified error.
System Restore to an earlier date - failed, unspecified error.
Avast! - two malwares from Daemon Tools (expected) and two files that couldn't be read from the HD. X13-40150.exe, and 2f8fce3.msp.
Reinstalled Windows - ongoing, but dam my HD is looking a LOT cleaner! It went from 85% capacity to 20% capacity xD (after copying my backups back in of course)
As for comparing MapleStory's performance before and after, MS is now having repeated sound segments (like as if it froze permanently or something), sometimes it takes forever for a single thing to cache, or any combination of strange things.

Well if you hear your harddisk rattling in a weird way and you get bad sector reports from surface scans...
Get a new Harddisk ASAP!!! Really, they're really cheap these days, also for laptops.
Get a new harddisk, install windows on it, and copy your documents/photo's/screenshots/video's on the new one ASAP, before the old harddisk totally fails and you lose everything what's on there!

Uh, I don't think my HD is rattling. And if it was, it sounds just like any other circuit static noise from busy computers.
I already have my "omg I must not lose it" files backed up already.
Anyways, updated the results of the avast! scan. I'm highly suspect of the 2f8fce3.msp file, since it's a Windows Installer patch file from what I can look up on it.

Every piece of computer-like equipment should emit such noises. The issue of whether you can hear it or not is usually depending on how much ventilation there is, whether there's a fan on, blah blah blah. Tbh, I'm not sure exactly what causes the static noise =/ But if it's the HD, that makes quite a bit of sense, and only reinforces my CRC error theory.
EDIT: I just put my ear up to my external backup HD while it was copying stuff, and it does make static noises =O

The annoying thing about hard disks is that their death is slow and painful... I once had a hard disk that was dying for a year or so, and it had a 3 years warranty but these idiot tech guys didn't believe me and said that the reason why copying 5kb files took 10 mins and my computer "forgot" that theres an operating system on it every 3 days was a virus. Then it died one day and also (not sure if the two problems were related) killed the cd rom with it, and they had to give me new ones.
