Ask an Atheist - hadriel - 2011-05-18 Fine then. For the sake of objectivity and fairness, please state your reasons for asking those questions. You probably should have observed that listing a load of questions is deemed by some as spamming, and hence. Hadriel Ask an Atheist - Satellite - 2011-05-18 MetaSeraphim Wrote:Bro, before you go around trying to get in debates with people about their beliefs you need to at least drop a little bit of that arrogant air you're putting off. Respect those even if you don't agree with what they believe.http://www.atheists.org/religion Quote:In the history of the world, nothing has been the catalyst of more grief, hatred, war, and crime than religion. Religion allows a person to hate, kill, torture, or steal, while allowing him to recuse himself of all blame. Religion causes people to break the laws of ethics and morality in the name of a god. I respect them, but I believe that if innocent have to suffer because of some groups and their teachings, it is impossible to go toward world peace. And I belive that it's enough of a reason to question the teachings and authority of religionic groups. I respect the traditions in many religions, but I believe we should treat religion as mythology and culture of a nation. Do not remove stuff live funerals and weddings (+ engagement rings), just make it neutral. @Hadriel You ninja'd in between, but I think this post gives enough of a reason for those questions. Ask an Atheist - Locked - 2011-05-18 Satellite Wrote:http://www.atheists.org/religion Quite possibly the worst thing I've ever read in my entire life. Quote:We're respectful of the American people's individual rights to practice as they see fit (equal to our rights to do the same), but this does not mean we have to respect the decision. If you choose to ignore logic and knowledge in order to believe in an invisible magic man in the sky, or Santa Claus for that matter, you've made a ridiculous decision and we're not going to pretend it's "just another way of looking at things." Disrespecting other religions isn't a way to do things. Ask an Atheist - octopusprime - 2011-05-18 Kitteh Wrote:Perhaps we're arguing two different versions of the same word. In my book, if you don't currently have a belief in any type of god, then you're an atheist. Whether or not you entertain possibilities of the existence of the supernatural and are willing to change your mind based on evidence does not change that base distinction. If you are not convinced, then you don't really believe. I thought i replied to this much earlier, I apologize. I think the word that has to much baggage as you're calling it is atheism in this case. You're taking it beyond it's bounds. Atheism is belief or being convinced that there is no god or some spiritual being etc. etc. et al. Agnostics aren't convinced. They may not believe in God or a god because they haven't been convinced of it, but they haven't been convinced it's not there or real or true either. Atheism is truly the opposite of theism as the structure of the word implies. It's not just not thinking there isn't proof of god, it's thinking there is proof for the opposite. There was a time when Religion ruled the world and it's now known as The Dark Ages. I still wonder how in this society, you can be such a generalizing hypocrite who casts the first stone and calls other people out for flaming, but when there is a small sign that your opinion is not infact emperically correct, it is bad. There was a time where power hungry b'astards ruled the world and it was known as hmmm... most of it. Dark Ages included. Religious alignment being through those times before the "age of enlightenment" was almost always a tool to control masses or just irrelevent. The fact that you think this actually reflects on religious or real believers shows how entirely ignorant you are when it comes to what they are actually about. Sorry you can't see past your own biases and bigotedness because you've stacked them a f'ucking mile high completely around you. Is there supposed to be a point to acknowledging that anything you say even exists? I mean discussion is impossible what do you want us to want from you? Are we supposed to gather around like hungry chicks while you vomit your hard edged opinions that are not only laced with generalizations and bigotry but are in fact, essentially made of them like it is mana from heaven? Excuse me, but f'uck off. You're arrogant beyond being worth talking to. I'm sure i could get you to complain about "Christians" (or whatever narrowminded word you decide to use for anyone who believes anything that day) being so high and mighty and overly judgmental but you're the worst I've seen from either side of the line whom I think is actually posting with a serious intent. What makes it ok for you? Quote:There is no difference between mythology and religion. Not to you. Satellite Wrote:@Hadriel Whatever you have to tell yourself. I think furthering your own delusion is the best step right now. Here's what i think the actual reason(s) is since people evidentially want the obvious spelled out: They are questions intended to be entrapping by setting up an unfavorable position in an argument just by answering. Example: would you rather kill two babies or three? If you answer within the confines of the question either way I've got you on killing babies. The bottomline comes down to his intent which i think could be: either a) he was threatened by what someone has said in someway and responded defensively with this. Or b) Doesn't know another way to discuss things he doesn't necessarily agree with. And seeing as they came relatively out of the blue and weren't exactly topical in the first place it could even also be c) he was just really looking to be able to use (note: not ask, use) them on someone for some other motive (i'd guess a self esteem boost for once again, "beaten dem stuped chrishans") Satellite feel free to stop me from putting words in your mouth and correct me if i'm wrong here. I'm curious to see what you'll say if you really give your intent. You're putting off this air of arrogance and superiority. You basing your "challenges" on the the basest of generalizations. And if someone comes in making generalizations about Atheists you jump on them. You seeing the disconnect here bro? You aren't making yourself look very good in this thread. You certainly aren't making yourself look like an intellectually superior being who is asking the hard hitting questions and challenging the evil evil religious people who have done such bad horrible bad things to the world. You're making yourself look like those evil "Christians" who go around saying if you're gay you're going to hell. And giving fellow Atheists a bad name in the meanwhile. I ain't trying to insult you or anything. But you need to realize how you're coming off in your posts, but maybe you already realize and you just don't care. Either way you won't get too far in life acting that way. octopusprime Wrote:I wouldn't quote it loosely unless you know it well. Arguing for either side i will typically get the better of you. I was being a bit facetious when i said challenge accepted. The original statement was really more of a warning against potentially putting your foot in your mouth when it comes to quoting or paraphrasing the bible. Since you say you're up to snuff I guess you won't need it. Agree to agree i suppose. Or disagree to disagree. Either way i'm getting some sleep. That didn't make you look very good either and it wasn't funny at all. I'll save you from essay here, but only cause I'm on my phone now. Ask an Atheist - Ladon - 2011-05-18 Satellite, you're killing me bro, hahaha. It seems to me you have formed your opinion on religion through some delusional stance that we are currently living in the 1500s. Besides those completely radical Muslims, would you like to point me to a group of crazy religious people trying to murder everyone who doesn't follow their beliefs? The crusades were a long time ago, let it go bro. Oh and as for the "God did it" excuse, you've got to be kidding me. Despite your wacko beliefs that God is some fake puppetmaster using his puppets to kill everyone and everything, God does not completely control your life. He may lay down a path for you, but it's up to you to follow it. Let's start off with that one, considering you are fitting every generilzation I have stated. In fact you are the epitome of my view of an Atheist. Saying "Think before you post" isn't an argument, it's a derogative statement attacking me personally because you think you're smarter than me. I think I do a considerable more time contemplating possibilities, based on the videos presented, than let's say you, who is more like a donkey screaming "NONONONONONONO". Satellite Wrote:Never heard of unorthodox form of a deity? Of course I have, but that is completely against the teachings of the Bible. If you are a Christian, you shouldn't believe in "wrong god" like that. Calling me ignorant? Read your own post again. ...LOL Do you know the definition of an Atheist because it's certaintly not "DOESN'T BELIEVE IN CHRISTIANS". Also like to mention christianity isn't the definition of religion, thus proving your own inferior perception. Ask an Atheist - Tykian - 2011-05-18 KhainiWest Wrote:Maybe you should ... start off with ... a ... post ... of videos of ... a donkey screaming "NONONONONONONO". Yes pls. (No but seriously Khainwest, the note about the Westboro church is way over the line, his views aren't nearly extreme enough. Also, hypocritical of you to call his entire post flame bait when yours is as well.) Okay, now a serious question for the christians here. Is it not hypocritical to follow some of what the bible tells you as though it is law, but not all of it? If I were to follow a religion I'd think it'd have to be all or nothing, y'know? Ask an Atheist - Sarah - 2011-05-18 Tykian Wrote:Yes pls. It is hypocritical but the problem is branched: People misinterpret what the bible says constantly. ex. God dislikes homosexuality so man must also dislike homosexuality to stay in his good graces. Besides that, God purportedly forgives 500,000 sins (off the top of my head) per person per day or something, so as long as you pray your sins and hypocrisy (save blasphemy) are negligible. This means that there are people who will knowingly and unknowingly pick and choose what the bible says and apply it to their lives at their leisure. Human nature is hypocrisy. It isn't limited to any religion or culture. Whatever is in our best interest is what we are inclined to do. Ask an Atheist - Satellite - 2011-05-18 Haha, Okay guys, let's make a deal. I'm the messiah and you subscripe to my church so I can live badass for the rest of my life. You get your religion, I get my cash. WIN-WIN Also mods: Move this to Funhouse or Angry Dome. The direction of this thread has changed. It was meant to be about others asking questions, but looks like it got out of hand. |
