your comment made me think. so often we think we know what we are doing... but we don't.
"There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." pro 14:11-12

so.... what to do in this world?
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." mt 6:33

Deists read the Bible and live by it? I doubt it.

You said, only more than 2 billion people? Wait... how many atheists are there? *confused*. Oh wait, I found it. They're listed under "millions".

While you were comparing the number of people that read the book to the number that don't, I was comparing the number of people that share one view versus the number of people that share your view - those that read the books on Pastafarianism (to get to the point, fewer by an order of magnitude).

If we read between the lines, it is possible to deduce that you are either atheist or agnostic.

But back on topic... the real original topic.

i guess i don't have much faith in my own judgment, maybe you do.

here's what the Bible says:
"There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." pro 14:12

yea i can't tell the difference between wrong and right very well. guess i'll depend on someone who can

You know, the more quotes from the Bible that you throw at an adamant atheist or agnostic, the more they laugh at you, because they base their thinking off their infallibly logical mind, which is obviously superior to anything Christians can offer in their opinion.

i guess it doesn't bother me? o.o

"All Scripture is God-breathed..." 2 tim 3:16

if i am not glorifying God with my life, i have no purpose and my life is meaningless. i want meaningful life. being on southperry is pretty meaningless if it comes down to it. if, instead, i do my best to serve God, and if that means being persecuted, then i will be persecuted for my God.

i am not looking for man's approval here. if you feel i am sinning, please tell me and i will try to repent.

if you take what i bolded here and all my bible quotes from previous pages, your god is a scary thing.

The BIBLE. - ♥Ji - 2009-02-19

XBish Wrote:if you take what i bolded here and all my bible quotes from previous pages, your god is a scary thing.
that is what the Bible says too:
"If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God." heb 26-27

if you actually fear God, then that is the right attitude to have

EDIT:
some more fear of God:
"Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name." dt 6:13
"The LORD commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the LORD our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today." dt 6:24
"And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the LORD's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?" dt 10:12-13
"Fear the LORD your God and serve him. Hold fast to him and take your oaths in his name." dt 10:20
"For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods." 1 chr 16:25
"All mankind will fear; they will proclaim the works of God and ponder what he has done." ps 64:9

the Bible has a lot more references than these, which i won't list out in their entirety. but fear of God? i hope you will someday.

The BIBLE. - Thunda - 2009-02-19

Your quotes XBish? Okay, let's take a look. Skyscraper post time.

Quote:Kill People Who Don't Listen to Priests
Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

This would be "contempt of court" in our society, and seeing as they had no jail... and I would argue that this nation would be under martial law, at war constantly. Therefore, failing to listen to your commander would result is being shot for insubordination and/or treason.

---

Quote:Death to Followers of Other Religions
Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the Lord alone, shall be doomed. (Exodus 22:19 NAB)

Surely you mean Exodus 22:20? ("Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.") Because 19 is ("Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal must be put to death."), and is legitimate; to prevent the spread of disease.

So you ever read of rituals of the other cultures? (Child sacrifice, etc.) There's a reason why these people were to be put to death.

Quote:Kill Nonbelievers
They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)

See above.

Quote:kill and rape everyone!!
As you approach a town to attack it, first offer its people terms for peace. If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labor. But if they refuse to make peace and prepare to fight, you must attack the town. When the LORD your God hands it over to you, kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that the LORD your God has given you.(Deuteronomy 20:10-14)

See above.

---

Quote:More Rape and Baby Killing
Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children. (Isaiah 13:15-18 NLT)

Go back through the chapter. This is not God (at least directly) or the Israelites carrying out the punishment.

The BIBLE. - ♥Ji - 2009-02-20

the nations surrounding israel were powerful, strong, wealthy. but they had also sinned, because they worshiped other gods. ten commandments, the first of which is:
"You shall have no other gods before me."

that's the short version explaining the first of xbish's quotes.

but it is not just about punishment of those nations. it is also about israel submitting to God.

if i can try to summarise it:
- israel was God's chosen people through no virtue of their own: they were all very sinful.
- God wanted his people to be holy, even though he knew they were sinful. again heronz' comparison of father and child.
- in his perfect wisdom he implemented ways for his people to become holy. if they submitted their will to him, they would be able to follow these ways.
(i'd quote but it will get too long)

if you look at the biblical context, you will see that israel did not especially want to make war on the nations around them. they were a small, wandering group of nomads, and all the nations around them were more powerful than they were:
"The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples." dt 7:7

dt 7 is entitled in the NIV "driving out the nations," sure enough this is what he wants israel to do. surely God cannot be commanding twelve weak little desert tribes to drive the nations out of their own lands? what can he be thinking? we read on to dt 7:23-24.
"But the LORD your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed. He will give their kings into your hand, and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you; you will destroy them."

it is only through God's power that they conquer nations. how else can a tiny little nation conquer many more powerful lands? God is not only revealing a miracle through israel but demonstrating to them that when they are humble and submit to him, they have a closer relationship with him and are in line with his commands. the victories are, on the one hand, God carving his name out in history and what kind of power he has, and on the other hand a human-palatable reminder of how important it is to submit to God.

that is where submission fits in, and always has, throughout the OT and NT and today. with relevance to xbish's quote, israel will not win the nations by killing on possessed rampages. they win by submitting to God and obeying his commands; see how when they submit, dt 1:13:
"The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes..."

compare how the reverse is true: if they do not submit to God, he won't fight for them, and in fact will fight against them. isa 63:10
"Yet they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy and he himself fought against them."

with application to xbish's verse about killing other nations -
- if they declare war on the nations in rebellion to God they will be overpowered, because they have become enemies of God.
- if they declare war on the nations in submission to God they will win wherever they go, because they have recognised him as their father.

God has not changed today. take home message: we find ourselves rebelling against God over and over again, just like israel (see nehemiah 9:26-29 for a crystal clear example): we still need to submit to God.

I disagree.
Why must evil be gotten rid of?
And what is evil?
If we define it and agree does that/our idea of good justify destroying said evil?
Is evil really a truth or is it a perception or degree.

Just a little side note to keep you all thinking a bit:

Evil and good are very conceptual... Everyone has his own vision of it. Christians have a wide variety of branches, extremist Islam considers evil anything other than God (non extremist are quite likely to christian, actually), Budists believe in karma...

If evil does get ridden of, will it dissapear? In my opinion, nope. It'll still exist as the less good. It's a concept that represents the worst things existing. If the worst ones dissapear, the next in line shows up.

My own code of conduct is to aid those in need, if I can, to not judge by appearances, and to make others feel what they make feel to others (Either good or bad, and knowing my limits). It matches the christian concept of good quite a lot, but not exactly at some aspects.

These are my thoughts, nothing more. My 20 cents, so to speak.

EDIT:
♥Ji Wrote:but fear of God? i hope you will someday.
We must be doing pretty well, even with only 33% of us believing in him, for him to not have obliteratred us already... I mean, he created us, something that is love itself, so we can fear him? Doesn't make sense to me, though, sorry.
