How acceptable is piracy to you?
Not acceptable for me anymore now that I can pay for music. For me it's not about whether it's okay to pirate or whether it's not okay to pirate. It's about value. If I feel I'm getting a better value by buying my music legally than downloading illegally, I'll do that. To this day there's not a single music downloading service that I like. So I will continue to pirate until a new, good downloading service appears.
Why do you believe piracy is not seen as stealing by many people?
Lack of enforcement and cultural acceptance. When everyone is going against the word of the law, it becomes difficult to enforce that through courts or other means.
Do you think piracy has, in anyway, changed the music industry for the better?
No. The MAFIAA's hubris and lack of change in means of acquirement for music, TV shows, and movies means that I can't buy, watch, or stream what I want to on demand. They have failed to show me a competitive product. Until the MAFIAA can show me that buying my music is better than downloading (as Steam has done - Since I started using Steam I haven't pirated a single game), then I will continue pirating.

It's stealing however you look at it, people don't view as such, IMO, because they are behind their computers, the anonimity of the internet. It's easy to steal when you are anonymous.

Copying isn't stealing, per say; for people like me, I would just not listen to music at all if I couldn't pirate, so they aren't losing anything off of me. Strictly for music, they should just be happy more people are listening, you know? Basically, if given a choice of absolutely no one buying your music and nobody ever hearing it, or everyone pirating it and everyone in the world hearing it, I'm pretty sure most musicians would prefer people to actually at least listen.

I don't budget for music (woo being a student and $20/month actually mattering) so I listen to music either on the radio (random shuffle), on my computer (mostly albums I own, some illegal stuff) or on youtube (if I want to hear a particular song, but don't have it)
It's no surprise to me that everybody's illegally downloaded music. Download systems have stayed well ahead of the legal stores (itunes etc.) in terms of availability, catalogue, and so forth.
I have no doubt that the music industry will eventually catch on to the online system, but I feel like they're not there yet.
Just speculation, but I think people would like more options when buying music.

$1.00 - unlimited listening, same as buying the CD.
I'd certainly be willing to pay a cent for every time I listen to a song... but there's no way to deliver music that way, yet. I guess systems like Pandora are getting there.

Doesn't make it any more legal than just stealing it for $0.00. It's more about providing options other than all or nothing. I don't necessarily want to listen to every album I download a thousand times... maybe I'm just interested in one song, and I'll give the rest a shot. Because you don't really see the people that you are stealing from, you just think that it is free music, everyone loves music.

I wouldn't say piracy has changed the music industry for the better, I would say that free music whether it be provided or pirated has changed the music industry for the better. There are plenty of people who become successful from giving their songs away for free. If someone likes your music, they will attend your shows, and will in turn tell their friends about it. And when you do in turn find a time that you feel like your fanbase is loyal, you can go ahead and sell your music and people will buy it.
PS>For example, Pretty Lights, an electronic artist has been giving his music away for free for years. Of course he has merch and box sets of his CDs, but he has grown so much. He now has his own record label which has 5-6 artists on it that give out their music for free also, but he was also just featured on the new Tron: Reloaded sountrack. How acceptable is piracy to you?
Only for music (and mediocre movies) it's pretty acceptable. Since I listen to J-Pop, it's hard for me to "buy" it. I don't really have the choice to buy. When I'm older I'll buy music (even Japanese) if I really like the artist and want to support them. Piracy involving movies is a bit iffy for me. I refuse to watch Inception (which I haven't watched yet) illegally. I want to see it in it's "glory". Movies that aren't very good, I'll watch online. I find pirating any type of game, other than CERTAIN PC games, unacceptable. When I'm older, I will buy all my games since it's less of a hassle.
Why do you believe piracy is not seen as stealing by many people?
Because so many people do it. It's also because most people are not really doing the stealing. They probably see it as getting shared files. Very few people physically steal the music. The lack of direct responsibility for the "stolen" good means people won't feel very guilty downloading pirated things.
It's also really easy to get away with.
+ You can listen to music for free just about anywhere at anytime now, so it doesn't really matter if we download it onto a portable device to do the same thing--it doesn't make sense to pay for it if we could listen to it for free in many other ways.

Also, like others said, piracy has probably made many unknown artists known and famous, as opposed to if it had never existed. It lets us consumers find more artists who otherwise would have never been found and would have even less money. In addition, the selling of albums these days hardly accounts for a musician's paycheck.

I believe so, however very little of it has been from domestic artists, so I'm not sure if it counts.

Whenever things are domestically released in a way were I don't have to pay 3x the price for importing, I am glad to support the market.

Had a few disks that came in combo-sets with game purchases, but other than that, the only thing I can remember buying that early was a cassette tape of N64 first party games from the Nintendo cataloger. I might have had a few more, but they'd be gone in that car fire we had years ago.

Hmm... Kinda stopped now. Nothing's really caught my attention from games (mainly since I haven't updated consoles). I do download remixes here and there, but those are put up for free by the artists themselves on a public hosting site.
How many albums or songs are you buying, and if so why do you choose to buy them when you can simply download them for free?
I have something like 35 albums now, and they were all purchased after my first "pirated" file. As I said above, if I find myself to really like the music, and it has been domesticated (with a few exceptions), I tend to buy the music whenever I can catch at least a 30% sale. I do want to support this market.

Amongst the 30 gigs I have on my comp; including those ripped from purchased disks and the free remixes; I'd say I have somewhere around 75 artists and almost all genres in existence save for rap and southern country.
How often do you go to concerts?
About once a year, occasionally skipping. Video Games Live. Was pissed I missed Nobuo's "More Friend's" performance in L.A. several years ago, but wound up importing (the irony being as I said it was played HERE) the album recorded then.

How acceptable is piracy to you?
As I stated earlier, I do prefer to buy things once they are made available, and I can afford them. "Piracy" can be used to describe what I do in some ways, but viewing piracy as a whole, I dislike it. This is partly from my love of the entertainment industry as a whole, and partly since I was working for said industry for a time. When I first got into this stuff, my mindset was different, and I didn't care about the repercussions, however I have changed my opinion over time.
Why do you believe piracy is not seen as stealing by many people?
Loose: Because they won't get caught.
^Pretty much this. I'd have to agree with it, but I still think it is wrong. But hey, I'm a ball o' hypocrisy anyway, so I'm guilty as well.
Do you think piracy has, in anyway, changed the music industry for the better?
I can't say. I have never interacted directly with the artists, so I'm not sure of what their thoughts are on the matter. Additionally, practically none of my collection is domestically made, so I haven't even conversed with those who generally pirate to get a rough idea of the overall impression from "our" side either.
