Things like the greenhouse effect and ozone depletion are well documented. You can't ignore the effects of all the carbon we're putting into the atmosphere. We're certain that we are doing something to the climate. What we don't know is how the Earth's climate changes over large periods of time, because science hasn't been around for millions of years yet. We have no way of knowing for sure which way climate change is going to go. The question isn't, "did we really screw up," it's "what are the consequences of our screw up, and how can we fix it?"

And next, we have to stop the sun burning out.

I was replying to the fact he said we don't know how temperature change works, but yet we know that humans cause global warming; the statement is contradictory. If we don't know how it works, then how do we know we cause it? It could be pure coincidence.

I agree that there is much evidence for global warming, and we may have a part in it. What I disagree with is Gore's propoganda to make people scared about it.

Edit: Also, about the Venus thing, Venus's rediculous global warming results from the fact that it's nearly all greenhouse gases. On earth, a tiny amount of our atmosphere causes the greenhouse effect, mostly water.

One major problem I have is the shear scale that these claims are based within. The timelines alone are hundreds and hundreds of years. You know how much happens in that time? Civilization was basically advanced to what it is in that amount of time. There is almost no sure fire way to prove that there is any effect. Sure, the coal age in the industrial revolution really put a toll on things, which some of can still be seen today.

Another problem is that all these "facts" people keep coming out with are being disproven left and right. Theres the major global climate change report that came out of the UK that was found to have falsified numbers found in internal emails that were basically stolen. Al Gores movie was a single perspective shot, as it showed the polar bears on melting pieces of ice. The problem is that its natural for the ice to melt and then re-accumulate, a fact that Al Gore failed to reveal.

Of course im pulling from a single side as well, but i try to look at things on both sides, but the side for global warming makes little sense to me based on what I have learned and witnessed. Last winter, there was actually snow where I live, and I live in Malibu, MALIBU!!! CA. Im literally a short drive away from the ocean, and a temperate zone thats classified as a desert. If anyhing, I fall in with climate fluctuation rather than global warming, or even global climate change (which I consider something more like global climate shifts).

Trees produce Methane, which is a key greenhouse gas and thus a contributor to Global Warming. I'm not a supporter of the whole Global Warming is coming thing, i just find it funny that trees can produce as much methane as a flock of cows or something. though the article says the methane really isn't a factor, so w/e.

Our Sun is far too small of a star to explode. Don't feel bad though, it'll find another way to kill us.

Whether or not you "believe in" global warming, I don't think anyone could disagree that developing more environmentally friendly ways to exist is a good thing.

Although, to be honest, I think we'll exterminate ourselves long before the Sun, Earth, or lack of natural resources have a chance to.

There is no stopping that what we really have to do is move to another solar system and try to fit in with the life already there.

Now hold on guys, if we hold multiple conferences, spend billions of dollars and have a little faith, MAYBE we can stop this natural occurrence.

Nonono guys. Part of global warming is that the earth actually gets cooler.

Actually, the reason it's been so cold is due to La Nina actually happening for the first time in... nearly 10 years?

I'll just leave this here...

No time to find a graph from TIME or another extremely reputable publication, but if we're going to play the PhD game, this graph is endorsed by 5, not 1. kthnx.

Well global warming makes the weather more extreme, that's it. The problem is, the ice from the polar caps melts SO fast in the summer (ice melts faster then it forms. especially on SALT sea water), that it doesn't grow back 100% in winter, resulting in less sunlight being reflected backwards away from the earth, and more warmth taken in (by the water that used to be ice) by the planet itself. If the seawater gets warmer, it means more water vapor in the air (mostly above the sea) causing El Ninja / El Ninjo, which cause even more extreme weather all over the planet (warmer summers / colder winters). Cycle repeats itself.

This cycle will keep repeating itself till the whole sky is filled with clouds (think about 99% cloud covarage of the earth, like venus who has 100% cloud covarage). 100% cloud coverage will cause an almost perfect sunlight reflection, cooling the earth down again. Sounds good you say? Well the problem is that earth's outside temperatures are so high you can't survive very long there... Not a good idea to let it become that way... Wink

Btw, the name "global warming" is wrongly chosen... It should have been called "global weather extremism"

It costs nothing but a large inconvenience for us to just drastically cut down our usage of energy and live a simple again

Dusk Wrote:Are you guys actually doubting global warming? There's mounds of evidence for it and pretty much nothing against it.

1. Yes
2. If that's true, you should be able to provide us with some sort of credible link, so please do.

Supposed fact about global warming: Ice cap temperatures are increasing to a point where they could eventually melt, and cause insane amounts of damage to the globe's climate.

Actual fact from NASA and the NWS: Over the past twenty years, the numbers have fluctuated from positive to negative in such a way, that there have been absolutely no reported damaging temperature changes, especially nothing that would cause a severe glacial disaster. Yes the earth gets cooler as a cause of this "warming" or whatever naming scheme you choose to use, but I still am not convinced that this is a problem at all, or better yet, if it even exists. Once I see numbers that prove this extreme temperature change and that it can ACTUALLY be a problem, you might make a believer out of me. But as of right now, I reside in the same boat as the rest of the skeptical science world. And they basically say, The numbers aren't varying enough to suggest that this increase/decrease in temperature around the polar ice caps should ever be a problem.
.....
Point? Just because people say UV rays and such get trapped within the walls of the Earth's atmosphere, doesn't mean that they turn the planet into a greenhouse. And if the reported "holes in the ozone layer" were actually where they are estimated to be, the damage would have already been catastrophic. And solar flares have absolutely nothing to do with global warming either. I'm getting pretty sick of reading (not in this thread, mind you Tongue) that the magnetic fields around the Earth and Sun are what make solar flares, and ultimately contribute to global warming. That couldn't be a more false statement. Sure, scientists claim to have "figured global warming out", but I'm going to stick with the actual numbers from NASA and the NWS that prove the temperatures around the north/south pole have fluctuated from warmer to colder depending on tides and lunar activity, and ultimately show that if global warming was indeed to be a problem, it would have already reared it's ugly head.

Lawns May Contribute to Global Warming - VladTheLvr - 2010-01-26

But why would global warming already rear its head when we have only begun to emit carbon dioxide since the last two centuries. Dont forget that we also have the occasional volcano emmiting CO2.

And looking at the chart, a millennium is chump change compared to the large history of the planet.

Lawns May Contribute to Global Warming - Super_cyp - 2010-01-27

To hell with reading all of that I read the first line and instantly thought 'So everything should look like the desert, that everything should be like a coal mine, and nuclear power stations or what forests are now... HOUSES' Hmph this is why I don't read news, Trees give oxygen, we cut them down, there goes the air purifier. I'll stick to that and when the time comes that they realise they have effed up, we'll be dead and gone.

News is so full of bull these days. I don't trust what I read, how do you trust a society that is corrupt? Simple, you can't.

Lawns May Contribute to Global Warming - psychopat - 2010-01-27

In first year, I got stuck taking a Geology class... The teacher was completely unconcerned about Global Warming due to how the current change in temperature hasn't deviated from the norm at all when looking at it from a geological perspective. It's been completely normal so far. I obviously can't attest to the veracity of that or the following comment, but he also said that human influence has only increased by 3% the total emissions of greenhouse gasses and such, as compared to all of the others (such as volcanos, trees, animals, etc.) Heck, trees alone apparently account for ~30%... TREES!

Lawns May Contribute to Global Warming - VladTheLvr - 2010-01-27

I thought trees reduce carbon dioxide emissions, along with plankton.
Either way, no matter who causes global warming, a rise in sea level is harmful to ocean front property.
